Joe McKeehen didn’t set out to win the World Series of Poker Main Event.
He didn’t even set out to become a poker player.
He was just a normal kid from Philly.
Played baseball.
Played basketball.
Wasn’t particularly great at either.
Then his younger brother was born.
And somehow…
that’s when he started staying home more.
Playing on the computer.
And poker was just… there.
No deposit.
No bankroll.
No plan.
Just freerolls.
Forums.
And random people on the internet sending him money to play.
At one point?
He was over six figures in makeup.
Still in college.
Still trying to figure it out.
Still thinking this might not even work.
Then things started to turn.
A $175K score his senior year.
Enough to pay off loans.
Enough to believe this wasn’t just a side thing anymore.
Then came the summer.
The one everyone dreams about.
The World Series of Poker.
Joe had basically bricked everything.
No heater.
No momentum.
Just another grind.
Then the Main Event started.
Day 1?
He remembers one thing.
He left the table to go to the bathroom.
That’s it.
By Day 3?
He had all the chips.
Cards were coming.
People were scared.
Everything just… worked.
Then came the moment.
Daniel Negreanu.
The entire poker world wanted him to win.
The cameras were on him.
The crowd was on his side.
The story was already written.
They got it in.
It was a flip.
And Joe won.

From there…he ran over the field.
Won the Main Event.
And became world champion.
But here’s the part most people don’t talk about:
He says he didn’t do anything special.
He just had the chips.
The cards came.
And sometimes…the sun just shines on you.
That’s poker.
If you’re new around here:
Every week (or so) we pull someone out of the game and ask how they got there.
This week is Joe’s full story:
From freerolls…
to six figures in makeup…
to winning the biggest tournament in poker…
to what happens after the cameras turn off.
Along the way we talk about:
• Starting from nothing (no deposit, just freerolls)
• Being six figures in makeup early in his career
• Winning $175K in college
• The WSOP Main Event run (and what he actually remembers)
• Busting Daniel Negreanu with the whole world watching
• Why tournament poker is mostly about surviving variance
• Life after winning the Main Event
• Why he still approaches poker the same way today
